For week 3, the lecturer expounded on the fundamental principles of sustainable development, namely environmental, social, and economic sustainability, during the class. I believe that we can apply this idea to the way we go about our everyday lives.
Environmental sustainability, first and foremost, emphasises the significance of environmental conservation in Islam and Maqasid Shariah in maintaining the environment. Muslims believe that the environment was made by Allah SWT and should be used by humans in accordance with the Shariah laws found in the Quran and the Sunnah. Islam promotes environmental preservation because it can benefit others—for example, all living things require clean air to breathe. Second, because Islam protects the rights of others and forbids the exploitation of those rights, the concepts of justice and equity are emphasised in social sustainability.
Then, economic sustainability was discussed regarding wealth distribution and the application of Islamic economics in life. For example, in Islam, the way to distribute wealth after death will be according to the Faraid laws. This is to ensure that everyone's rights are protected fairly.
